Becoming a witness to Mercy

Live in the Holy Spirit

The new missionary élan founded on the devotion to Divine Mercy can only be lived in the presence of the Holy Spirit because the mere fact of speaking about God implies that the person of the Holy Spirit and His breath is acting in us, He who is Love Personified, eternal fruit of the Love between God the Father and God the Son.To announce the Merciful God, means to chose to allow the Spirit to speak, to act and to love through us ; it also means to invoke him at every instance, and particularly during every mission ; it means to pay great attention to His action in one’s own daily life, in the Church and in the World.

The Parable of the Prodigal Son

To announce God, the Merciful Father, is also to reach into the Parable of the Prodigal Son (see ref. D.M. n.5-6) :

→The joy of the father who rediscovers his son is also that which the missionary feels whenever he helps someone find their way towards God ;

→The élan and the open arms of the father towards his son should be the attitude of the missionary who announces the Mercy of God : availability, understanding, and compassion towards those who suffer ;

→The trust of the son in his father allows him to return home to him and implore his forgiveness : being a witness of Mercy means that the same climate of trust between the suffering person and God is created.

Reading the Word of God

The Word of God is the foundation of the revelation of God’s plan of salvation. The missionary of mercy will take to heart the reading and the study of Scripture, by understanding it in the perspective of the unique revelation of the Mercy of the Father. This being the case, the parable of the Prodigal Son - or more correctly, of the merciful Father - could constitute a key element in the reading and in the study of Holy Scriptures for our world today.

Partaking in the Sacraments

To be a witness of the Mercy of God can only be understood and lived out in the light of the life of Christ, who himself is the First evangeliser of the world. The missionary who is attentive to his prayer life and who participates in the sacraments shows his desire to conform himself to Christ and in so doing, allows God to mould him in His image. The missionary must have experienced the Mercy of God first of all in his own life, if he wants to announce it with confidence and respect.

The Eucharist and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, the Sacrament of Forgiveness, are therefore indispensable nourishment for him to be able to announce the God of Mercy and of Love : for close to God and close to human kind, the missionary becomes a privileged channel to lead a single person to the Presence of God in the Eucharist.He will also respond to the request of the Pope in Dives in Misericordia that "Everything that I have said in the present document on mercy should therefore be continually transformed into an ardent prayer : into a cry that implores mercy according to the needs of man in the modern world." (D.M.n.15)

The Example of the Virgin Mary

One cannot talk about the Divine Mercy manifested in Christ without alluding to the Virgin Mary, herself, the Mother of Mercy, and best placed to guide souls towards her Son and give them a heart of mercy. To be a witness of Mercy, is to keep the same pure and open heart of Our Lady, to pray with perseverance and intercede for the people encountered "The Mercy of the Almighty God reaches from generation to generation, his love reaches from age to age for those who fear him" (Luke 1,50)To be a witness of Mercy, means also to follow Mary to the foot of the Cross, to look at it without weakening, and to tell all humankind that Christ is Mercy.

It is the call of God to make his inexhaustible mercy known to all people which is resounding throughout the whole world. We are invited above all to pray so that we be open to receive this grace of mercy into our own lives and in so doing, we can give witness to it for others.
